![]() After all, the category of ‘neutral’ more often than not overlaps with the identity of the cultural authority, and so is not in fact politically neutral. Why is it that theatre has not yet moved beyond a homogenous world view to presenting a world that more accurately reflects society’s heterogeneity? I have developed a methodology for directors, teachers and actors that seeks to speak back to these discriminatory practices by opposing the idea of ‘neutral’ in which actors’ differences are stripped away and “the assumption of a shared universality” (Bharucha, 2000: 35) is favoured. While there are theatres that serve varied communities and engage with international and intracultural arts, there is still an imbalance whereby cultural representations reflecting society’s diversity are not seen on a consistent basis. In 2016, state funded theatres in the United Kingdom and Australia (the territories in which I locate this thesis) are still largely monocultural, both in terms of the people on stage and the people watching the work created. This methodology is addressed primarily to directors and teachers in both training and professional theatre environments, and therefore offers specific guidance on rehearsal room practice. ![]() This thesis offers an evolved methodology of practice that acknowledges and utilises difference in performance, and offers a potential way forward for theatre practice. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Again, you get rushed, and you feel the stress of the world on you, and the books aren’t good. And I think with my writing, it is going to benefit going forward. It turned out to be a healthy thing for me – even though I know it’s been agonizing for some people – to get me in a better place and my family in a better place. There were health reasons, there were mental points to it… and it just, it became… I don’t know. Oh boy, there’s so many answers I can give! I could be like, I was doing cross-fit the whole time or I was training up for Dancing with the Stars or making candles. I want to feel it and know that this is going to be awesome. And so, the reason I kind of hem and haw between these ideas is that I want it to be gold. ![]() I felt like there was a time there where I was trying to rush so many books out the door, that they weren’t to the quality that I wanted. That’s probably my fault, I’ve become my own worst critic, where I don’t want to follow through or do anything unless I feel it’s perfect, it’s amazing. Nothing enough that I can crack down and be like “here it is, here’s this book that’s coming.” There’s two things I’d say that I kind of go back to, play with and do scenes for. I’ve kind of definitely shelved one for now. I have… I would say two things right now. But let’s get to what’s important – what, if any updates did Richelle provide about Age of X? Below is a transcript of key questions, edited for clarity. ![]() |
